How Does Algorithmic Trading Work?

Algorithmic trading is a way of placing orders into the market, based on a set of rules coded into the trading platform. To put it simply and provide a full outline of the process, this section shows the steps involved in setting up an algorithmic trading portfolio.

The algorithm, code or program – this is where the trading strategy or plan is stored. Everything from when to enter, exit and how much money to use is stored here.

The trading platform – this is where the algorithm is placed and where it interacts with the market.

The broker – the broker gives you a platform as part of their service offering, along with access to financial markets.

You – Using the trading platform given to you by the broker, you place the algorithm into the program and it can then trade the financial markets for you automatically.

What do I need as an Algorithmic Trader?

As an algorithmic trader, you need a few things to get started.

First, you will need a computer or laptop, or at least have access to one.

Then you will need the algorithm. This is simply a file you can drag and drop into place and it will trade for you. The magic comes from what is written inside the program.

Finally, you need a broker account who also provides the platform which is called MetaTrader 5 or MT5.

There is an optional step, which is a VPS or Virtual Private Server which is basically a remote computer that operates 24 hours a day, running your platform and code non stop. Alternatively, you need to run your computer when the markets are open, which is 24 hours a day on weekdays (closed for weekends).

What costs are involved?

The course itself is free (but get in while it’s still new, because it won’t be free forever!).

If you don’t have a computer, you’ll need one, which could be anywhere from $600 and up.

A good VPS is around $35 a month, but this isn’t necessary unless your ready to run your algorithms. You can absolutely test them and play around with the program on a computer. You can also run the algorithms on a computer without using a VPS too.

To trade real money, you need an account with a broker. The broker gives you access to the markets and the platform. Generally, the minimum deposit is around $200. There is the option to use a demo account at first, to test it all out and see how it functions without having money on the table.

This means that if you already have a computer and internet access, it won’t cost you anything to simply get in, try it out and run some algorithms on a demo account.

The cost is therefor $0, but for those wanting to make the most of the program, a real account would be far more rewarding (but that’s completely up to you).

In saying this, it is not something that will make you wealthy in a short period of time. It is probably far easier to be patient with something that works in the background (like the algorithms we teach you about), than something you have to physically take action on over and over.

What happens once an algorithm is placed on the trading platform?

Provided the computer or VPS is running and is connected to internet, the program will continue to run until you stop it. It is ideal to check that the program is still running from time to time, and you will most likely be excited to see how the algorithm performs every now and then. You can check trades on a mobile device and even adjust or close your trades from a mobile too.
